How to fix a faded PDF

Fading is not a PDF problem. It happened to the paper — in a warm drawer, in sunlight, or across three generations of photocopier — long before anyone scanned it.
What software can do is recover the difference that remains between ink and paper, however small. That is usually enough to make a document readable again, and it is worth knowing where the limit is.
The recovery limit, stated plainly
If a stroke is even slightly darker than the paper around it, it can be pulled back towards black. Most "faded" documents are in this state: the information is intact, just squeezed into a narrow band of greys that neither your eye nor your printer can separate.
If a stroke has reached exactly the same value as the paper, it is gone. There is no signal left to amplify, and no tool recovers it. On old thermal receipts you can watch this happen along a single line: the middle survives and the ends have simply stopped existing.
Documents that respond well
- Thermal receipts and till rolls that have started to grey out.
- Carbon and NCR copies — delivery notes, order books, prescription duplicates.
- Photocopies of photocopies, where each pass lost a little more.
- Pencil annotations on printed pages.
- Old fax printouts, which begin faint and keep fading.
Why patchy fading needs local correction
Fading is rarely uniform. A receipt that lived folded in a wallet fades along the crease; a page that sat in a sunlit window fades at one edge.
A single global adjustment cannot serve both regions — whatever rescues the faded edge over-darkens the intact centre. Estimating the paper level locally across the page and correcting each region against its own background is what makes patchy documents recoverable at all.
Be gentle with the background
The instinct with a faded document is to push the background hard towards white. On a faded document that is exactly the wrong instinct, because ink and paper are close together — pushing the white point down far enough to clean the paper can cross the faintest strokes and erase them.
A well-built tone curve refuses to let the white point fall onto the measured ink level, and the faded-PDF mode starts with conservative background correction for the same reason. If you are driving the sliders yourself, raise Text Darkness before you raise Background.
Keep the original
Enhancement discards tonal information. That is the point, but it means the enhanced file is a derivative, not a replacement.
For anything legal, financial or historical, archive the untouched scan as the record and treat the enhanced version as a reading and printing copy. Whether a processed copy is acceptable to whoever receives it is their decision to make, so give them both if in doubt.
Questions
Can a faded signature be recovered?
Often, partly. Keep colour enabled — blue and black inks fade at different rates, and the residual colour difference helps a faint signature separate from the paper in a way pure lightness does not.
Should I use Black & White mode on a faded document?
Usually not. Thresholding forces a decision on every pixel, and on a faded document the faintest strokes lose that decision and vanish. Keep the greys and darken them instead.
