Before and after

A faded scan, enhanced by the same engine that will process your file — running right here in your browser.

Preparing the demonstration…

Does your PDF print too light?

A screen is backlit, so grey text on light grey paper still looks like contrast. Paper only reflects the light in the room, so the same page arrives faint, washed out and hard to read.

It shows up in scanned contracts, old photocopies, thermal receipts, bank statements, shipping documents, government forms and design exports that used grey where they should have used black.

Make your PDF darker and easier to print

The tool measures each page — how light the ink is, how grey the paper is, how much of the tonal range is being used — and then re-maps that range so the ink lands near black and the paper lands near white.

Pages that are already solid black on clean white are recognised and left alone, so a good page is never degraded to fix a bad one.

How it works

  1. 1

    Upload

Pick a PDF or drop it on the page. It stays on your device.

  2. 2

    Enhance

Each page is measured and corrected by only as much as it needs.

  3. 3

    Preview

Compare the original and the enhanced page with the slider.

  4. 4

    Download

Save a new print-ready PDF. Your original file is never modified.

What it does

Your files stay on your device

DarkenMyPDF has no upload endpoint. Reading the PDF, rendering the pages, measuring them, enhancing them and writing the new file all happen inside your browser tab, using your own device’s processor.

That is not a policy promise — it is how the application is built. There is no server that receives your document, so there is nothing to store, log, train on or delete. The page does load its code and a PDF rendering library from this site, and if analytics is enabled it counts page views and anonymous events; neither ever sees your file.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my PDF print too light?

Usually one of four reasons. The document was scanned from a faint original, so the "black" text is really mid-grey. The scanner captured grey paper, and the printer reproduces that grey faithfully. The PDF uses a very thin font, which a screen smooths out but a printer cannot. Or the printer itself is set to toner-save/draft. A screen is backlit and adds apparent contrast; paper does not, so anything already marginal on screen falls apart in print. See why PDFs print lighter than they look.

How can I make PDF text darker?

Upload the file above. DarkenMyPDF measures each page, works out how faint the ink is relative to the paper, and applies a tone curve that pushes the ink towards black while pushing the paper towards white. You can also drive it manually with the Text Darkness slider under Advanced settings.

Can I darken a scanned PDF?

Yes — that is the case it was built for. Scanned pages are rendered, measured, corrected for uneven lighting, re-toned and written back into a new PDF. Try Make Scanned PDF Darker.

Why does my PDF look fine on screen but print light?

Your screen emits light, so grey text on a light grey background still looks like solid contrast. Paper only reflects it. A 40% grey that reads clearly on a monitor prints as a washed-out grey, and toner-saving modes make it worse. Darkening the file before printing fixes the cause rather than fighting the printer.

Does DarkenMyPDF work with multi-page PDFs?

Yes. Every page is measured and corrected on its own, so a document that mixes clean pages with faint scans is handled correctly rather than getting one blanket adjustment. The current limit is 100 pages per file.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes, on modern iPhone, iPad and Android browsers. Processing happens on the device, so a very large scan may take longer on a phone than on a laptop, and extremely large files may run out of memory — the tool tells you if that happens instead of failing silently.

Are uploaded PDFs stored?

No. Nothing is uploaded. The whole pipeline — reading, rendering, measuring, enhancing and writing the new PDF — runs inside your browser tab. There is no server that receives your document, so there is nothing to store, log or delete. Read the privacy policy for the specifics.

Will the original PDF be changed?

Never. The tool reads your file and writes a brand new one, saved with a new name such as `invoice-print-ready.pdf`. The file on your disk is untouched.
